GUIDELINES FOR UNIT GUIDERS
What to do if a young person, male or female, asks to do the Service Section for their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award by helping with your Rainbow Unit/Brownie Pack/Guide Company:
| 1. |
Welcome them and chat to them about possible tasks/skills that they can share. Check how long they are offering to help for. How much do they know about how The Guide Association functions? Who in your unit could mentor them? Will you or the young person need special advice or training from the County Advisers? – if in doubt, ask. If you cannot offer them the opportunity to give service to your unit, then please pass them via your DC to another unit rather than lose them. |
| 2. |
If the young person is 16 or over, even if you already know them, complete a WR form and send it off to you DC who will forward it to the County Registration Secretary. Ensure that the young person is aware that they cannot start giving service until the WR form is cleared. Young people aged 14 and 15 do not need to complete a WR form. |
| 3. | Complete a D of E Service Registration Form (available from your DC, County Adviser or the County web site), and send it straight away to your County Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Adviser. |
| 4. | Introduce the young person to their Mentor (if it is not you) and give the young person a copy of “Guidelines for Instructors and Other Supporters” (available form your DC). |
| 5. | After the WR form is cleared, agree appropriate task(s) for the young person to carry out and arrange a suitable date to make a formal welcome at your meeting and introduce them to the members. |
| 6. | Both you and the appointed Mentor should ensure that advice and help continues and that progress is monitored. The Mentor should check that the young person is regularly completing their D of E service log. |
| 7. | If the service is going well and the young person seems likely to want to continue after the D of E Award period, introduce them to your DC who will be able to talk to them about becoming a leader. |
| 8. | When the period of service has been successfully completed the Mentor must sign-off the D of E Record Book. If there are any queries contact the County D of E Award Adviser. |
